Buddhism in Ancient Sri Lanka
Similar to the influence that the Buddhism had in the ancient Sri Lankan civilization, culture, literature, ruling, cuisine, arts, and many more, the architecture also produced many Stups or Chaithyas which were mainly built to preserve relics of Lord Buddha. The North Central part of Sri Lanka is home for may magnificent Stupas that rooted huge religious value to the land. During the ancient days, it is considered as a responsibility of a Buddhist king to build such Stupas.

The architectural and engineering excellences of the ancient Sri Lanka were well displayed by these Stupas which are the recorded brick constructions identified as belong to pre-modern world. The Stupas were built in many shapes such as bell, bubble, pot, lotus, onion etc.. Though the shapes were differed the designs followed consistent specifications which is also another unique feature of the ancient architectural merits of Sri Lanka.
